The History Of Fancy Dress

So where did it all begin....

Every year the fancy dress and costume market is increasing and has evolved from people making costumes of their own to an industry with thousands of different costumes to choose from but when and how did we start dressing up?

It is believed that in Britain fancy dress or costume parties as they can be known, can be traced as far back as the 18th century masked balls, even now masquerade eye masks are still very popular, but became more modern and familiar in the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Fancy dress parties started to become more common amongst the general population in the 1940s and really took off in the 1970s when costumes were largely home made before better quality and licensed costumes became available for people to hire for their event.

It wasn't until the late 1990s that the fashion switched from hiring costumes to the current trend of purchasing costumes and accessories which with the import of overseas costumes started to become much more affordable and coupled with an increase in fancy dress parties and party themes have become an ever increasing market.

There are now thousands of costumes available to choose from with themes ranging from 1970's and 80's to licensed character costumes such as Elvis, Batman, Star Wars so whoever or whatever you want to dress as there will be a costume available.

Its clear to see that in a very short time fancy dress has become some what of a phenomenon and constantly evolving industry, we are all wondering where will we go from here?
